Santa Monica Airport (IATA: SMO, ICAO: KSMO, FAA LID: SMO) is a general aviation airport largely in Santa Monica, California, United States. The airport is about 2 miles from the Pacific Ocean (Santa Monica Bay) and 6 miles north of Los Angeles International Airport. The airport is mainly used by general aviation and as an alternate airport for the neighboring Los Angeles International Airport. However, only smaller aircraft can land on the single runway due to its short length. Numerous types of aircraft are also not permitted to land at the airport for noise abatement reasons, as it is located in a densely built-up area. The airport was built after World War I and soon became the headquarters of the Douglas Aircraft Company.
