Freeware for Cincinnati Municipal Airport Released
Cincinnati Municipal Airport, commonly known as Lunken Field, is a historic public airfield located just three miles east of downtown Cincinnati. Established in 1925, Lunken Field has played a significant role in the region’s aviation history and today primarily serves private and charter aircraft, including local corporate fleets. The airport, identified by its IATA code LUK, remains a vital hub for regional air travel, with notable operators such as Ultimate Air Shuttle and Flamingo Air based at the site. Surrounded by key transportation routes like US Route 50 and the Ohio River, Lunken Field is strategically placed within the city's landscape. Though primarily focused on general aviation, the airport's legacy and role in Cincinnati’s air traffic are undeniable.
The newly released add-on for Microsoft Flight Simulator brings a detailed rendition of KLUK to the sim. The scenery features handcrafted models of all the buildings, Custom ground textures and accurately rendered taxiway lines. The internal ATC tower console has been integrated, with support provided by the UK2K library package, which is available for download from the in-game marketplace. The add-on also includes several interactive elements. Open hangars with animated doors, which function from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., allow for a more dynamic ground experience. Another feature is the inclusion of the airport beacon atop the nearby Mt. Washington Water Tower. Although the beacon is not visible from a distance, it adds a nice touch of realism to the surrounding area.
Despite efforts to preserve Lunken Field’s natural sloping terrain, some areas remain uneven or bumpy. However, key areas such as taxiways A and C, as well as the runways, are smooth for optimal operation. KLUK Cincinnati Municipal Airport is now available on Flightsim.to.
