Freeware Scenery Release for McCarthy in Alaska

The McCarthy, Alaska area has received a comprehensive overhaul thanks to the latest freeware scenery project by northcoaster76, now available for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. This expansive project revitalizes the remote region surrounding McCarthy, a small yet historically significant Alaskan town, enhancing its airstrips, roads, rivers, and overall environment to provide a more immersive experience.

Several private airstrips near McCarthy, previously overlooked or poorly rendered in the simulator, have been reworked. Among them, AK31 Swift Creek Airport has been refined to align closely with satellite imagery, bringing it to life with improved textures and decorations. Similarly, 0AK8 Fireweed Airport has undergone a complete transformation, addressing previous inaccuracies and adding lifelike details such as static aircraft and well-placed hangars. Additional unnamed private strips in the area have also been improved, with plans for further expansion in future updates.

Beyond the airstrips, the project includes significant enhancements to McCarthy’s surrounding environment. Roads in the region, which were previously littered with vegetation and inconsistencies, have been cleared, reshaped, and textured. This effort has created a network of gravel roads that can now be driven end-to-end using a land vehicle.

The rivers in the region, including the Kennicott River and the Nzina River, have also been corrected. These waterways, which originate from nearby glaciers, now feature realistic gravel bars and improved water textures. Recent updates, detailed in version 1.1, include fixes to airstrip textures, new decorative elements around hangars and key locations like Camp Kennicott, the addition of the McCarthy walking bridge, and adjustments to the rivers’ polygons.
