Microsoft Delays Sim Update 15 Again

Microsoft's hotly anticipated Sim Update 15  has regrettably encountered yet another setback. While the release was initially projected for early May, recent revelations have necessitated a further delay, with no definitive new launch date provided. The journey of Sim Update 15 has been marred by a series of postponements. Originally slated for a March 12th rollout, the update was first pushed back to March 26th, then to April 30th, and subsequently to May 7th, before encountering its latest impediment.

The root cause of this most recent delay stems from the emergence of critical issues during the testing phase of the previous beta build, version 1.37.15.0. Two major problems were identified: a WebAssembly (WASM) "missing content" error and performance degradation on the Xbox platform, manifesting as stuttering and freezing during flight sessions. While the newest beta update, version 1.37.17.0, has successfully addressed the WASM error and resolved minor glitches like DX12 aerial pop-in artifacts, the Xbox stuttering and freezing issues persist, attributed to recent updates to the Game Development Kit (GDK).

In an attempt to mitigate the Xbox performance issues temporarily, the development team has suggested enabling the rolling cache option within the simulator's General Options menu. This interim measure aims to reduce the likelihood of encountering stuttering and freezing during flights while the team works to identify and resolve the underlying cause. Asobo Studio, the driving force behind Microsoft Flight Simulator, has set its sights on delivering a comprehensive fix for the Xbox stuttering and freezing by the following week. However, this timeline implies that the release of Sim Update 15 will likely be pushed back by at least two weeks or more, as the new version will require additional testing and validation.

While the wait may be frustrating, the anticipation surrounding Sim Update 15 is well-justified, as it promises a multitude of improvements and additions to the already impressive Flight Simulator experience. For example, Working Title has been entrusted with revamping the Garmin G3X avionics suite, a pivotal component of many aircraft within the simulator.  The update will also introduce iniBuilds' highly anticipated A320 neo aircraft. This new variant of the Airbus narrowbody promises to deliver enhanced levels of detail and accuracy. Sim Update 15 will also bring forth improvements to the AI traffic system and a revamped ground physics system.
