Taieri Airport Released in Detailed Freeware Scenery

Tucked into the broad, flat expanse of the Taieri Plains just west of Dunedin on New Zealand's South Island, Taieri Airport (NZTI) is the kind of airfield that rewards those willing to venture off the beaten path. Sitting only a few kilometres north of Dunedin International Airport, Taieri occupies a distinct and storied place in New Zealand aviation history.

NZTI Taieri Airport Overview

Community developer robtopp has now released an updated version of the NZTI Taieri Airport scenery, rebuilt and expanded specifically for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. This is not a straightforward port of the earlier 2020 release — the scenery has been substantially reworked, with new buildings, added ground detail, and a level of fidelity that goes well beyond what was previously available. The result is a highly detailed, character-rich depiction of a small New Zealand airfield that feels authentic to the real location.

NZTI Taieri Airport Detail

The scenery features two grass runways. The surrounding environment benefits from high-resolution aerial imagery sourced from the Otago 0.1m Urban Aerial Photos (2023–2024 dataset provided by Land Information New Zealand (LINZ), delivering crisp, accurate ground textures that ground the scenery firmly in its real-world context. Custom-modelled buildings throughout the airfield reflect the various tenants and operations present at Taieri, from the Otago Aero Club facilities to the broader industrial and commercial activity that borders the field.

The attention to detail extends to photoreal texturing on custom scenery objects, lending the airfield a sense of physical authenticity that early commenters have compared favourably to commercial payware releases. For helicopter operators in particular, Taieri makes for an excellent base from which to explore the Otago region, from the dramatic hill country to the east through to the wider South Island landscape.

NZTI Taieri Airport Buildings

If you fly in the New Zealand region or simply appreciate well-crafted general aviation scenery, NZTI Taieri Airport is well worth adding to your Community folder. As a freeware release, it is available at no cost, but if you find yourself enjoying the scenery and returning to it regularly, do consider supporting robtopp with a donation through the Flightsim.to page — community creators who produce work of this quality deserve the recognition.
