Vector Unveils Ambitious Boeing 787 "Project Griffin"

A new development studio, Vector, has announced its first project for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024: a Boeing 787-9 called “Project Griffin”. The team consists of more than 20 developers, including individuals who work as Boeing 787 pilots. According to the studio, the aircraft is being developed from the ground up and will not rely on the default Asobo 787 included with the simulator.

Vector states that the project has been in development for more than a year. The studio aims to create a detailed simulation of the aircraft’s systems and operations, with an emphasis on reliability and usability during longer flights. The aircraft’s flight model and handling characteristics are intended to reflect real-world performance across a range of weather conditions and operational scenarios.

Project Griffin is being developed using the WASM framework, which allows complex aircraft systems to run while maintaining compatibility with both PC and console versions of the simulator. Unlike some existing modifications of the default aircraft, the product is planned as a fully independent add-on.

At launch, the aircraft is expected to include both GEnx and Rolls-Royce Trent engine variants used on the real-world 787-9. The aircraft will also feature two Electronic Flight Bag interfaces: a Boeing-style EFB designed to replicate real-world workflows, and a separate tablet for configuration and additional functions. Navigation support is planned to include integration with Navigraph charts and the LIDO charts available in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024.

Other planned features include an interactive cabin system with configurable seating classes, automatic step climb functionality, a pause-at-top-of-descent option, and head-up display support. Vector also states that the aircraft will be compatible with the VATSIM network used for online air traffic control.

The Boeing 787 is already available in Microsoft Flight Simulator as the default 787-10, while other community and third-party projects provide additional variants or modifications. Vector’s aircraft focuses specifically on the 787-9 and is being developed independently of the default model.

The aircraft will be released as a payware product. A set of liveries will be included at launch, with additional livery packs planned after release. The studio also intends to publish a detailed flight manual covering aircraft procedures and systems. Vector currently targets a release window in 2026. The project’s first public presentation is scheduled for FSWeekend in Lelystad, where the studio plans to demonstrate the aircraft and answer questions from attendees. The team has also indicated that it will publish development updates covering areas such as systems, 3D modeling, and sound design as work progresses.

Project Griffin is planned exclusively for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. According to the studio, this allows the aircraft to take advantage of newer platform features without maintaining compatibility with earlier simulator versions. Development is ongoing, and additional details are expected to be shared over time. Follow Vector on InstagramFacebookX and Bluesky for development highlights, visuals, and key announcements.
