The Supermarine S.5 for Microsoft Flight Simulator

The Supermarine S.5 for Microsoft Flight Simulator

The Supermarine S.5, an iconic British monoplane built for the Schneider Trophy race, has been recreated for Microsoft Flight Simulator. This aircraft, which first took to the skies in 1927, was designed by R.J. Mitchell, famed for his later work on the Spitfire. Only three of these aircraft were ever built, with the S.5 achieving significant fame when it was flown by Sidney Webster of the Royal Air Force to win the 1927 Schneider Trophy race in Venice, Italy.

Key Features of the Supermarine S.5 Add-On

The add-on package includes the Supermarine S.5 seaplane, a fictional wheeled version called the S.5X, and the 1927 Schneider Trophy race course and seaplane base in Venice, Italy. The package aims to present the aircraft and race course as they would have been in 1927, meaning no electrical systems, radios, or modern instruments are included. This approach seeks to provide a somewhat immersive experience that closely resembles the actual aircraft of the time.

The flight model of the S.5 is based on the RAF 30 airfoil, and the package includes detailed cockpit features focused on engine performance and monitoring. It also incorporates unique features like a chronograph and lap counter for race tracking. Detailed instructions are provided for both water and land takeoffs and landings.

The add-on has also been tested for VR compatibility and includes operational features such as an unlockable canopy and realistic engine modeling with a penalty point system for over-revving. A land-based variation, the Supermarine S.5X, is included for those who prefer non-floatplane experiences. It shares the same flight and engine model as the seaplane variant. The Supermarine S.5 add-on for Microsoft Flight Simulator is now available here on Flightsim.to with excellent ratings so far.
